Gouda, Double Crème
Cheese Type: Semi Firm
Country: Netherlands
Milk Type: Cow
Double Crème Gouda is made with added cream, raising the fat content well above standard Gouda and producing a notably softer, richer cheese. It represents the indulgent end of the Gouda spectrum, closer in spirit to a rich table cheese than to an aging wheel.
Flavor Profile
The texture is the defining quality: exceptionally smooth, supple, and almost buttery on the palate, softening further at room temperature. The flavor is rich and sweet with a clean, milky finish and essentially no tang. It is gentle and luxurious, with richness doing the work that sharpness does elsewhere.
How to Serve
Serve at room temperature so the texture reaches its full softness. It spreads readily on bread and crackers and melts into an exceptionally smooth sauce. On a board it is the easy, universally liked option that guests return to.
Pairing Suggestions
Pair with a Chardonnay, a sparkling wine, or a light wheat beer. Serve with fresh fruit, honey, water crackers, and mild cured meats.
Storage
Wrap in wax paper and refrigerate. The higher moisture and fat mean it is best consumed within two weeks of cutting.
