Swiss – Hungary

Cheese Type: Semi Hard

Country: Hungary

Milk Type: Cow

Hungarian Swiss is Hungary’s take on the Emmentaler tradition, produced in a country with a long and underappreciated dairy heritage. Hungarian cheesemaking absorbed considerable Austrian and Swiss influence during the Habsburg era, and Emmentaler-style production dates from that period.

Flavor Profile

The cheese is firm and pliable with the classic large eyes of the style. The flavor is mild and sweet with a nutty, buttery character and a clean finish. Hungarian versions tend toward the gentler end of the Emmentaler spectrum, making them broadly approachable and easy to eat in quantity.

How to Use

Use it wherever a mild melting cheese is needed. It performs well in sandwiches, toasted rolls, omelets, and baked dishes, and its elasticity makes it a useful component in fondue blends. It slices cleanly and cubes neatly for platters.

Pairing Suggestions

Pair with a Hungarian white such as Furmint, a light lager, or a soft red. Serve with cured sausage, paprika-spiced accompaniments, pickled vegetables, and dark bread.

Storage

Wrap in wax paper and store in the refrigerator crisper drawer. Keeps well for three to four weeks.
